Personal Quilt

My Quilt

Inside

Ouitside

Future

Past

I was very unsure of how to do my quilt squares in the beginning because I didn’t exactly understand the project. I had a lot of roadblocks with my ideas in my mind.  As time went on and I finished one quilt Square though I started to get more and more ideas for my other quilt squares. As I understood it more, I decided that as a part of me, most of the squares will have something football related in them because football is one of the most important things in my life.

My mom and my dad are the most important thing though, so they have been included in every quilt. They have and always will be with me throughout my entire life and they will support me in any endeavor I undertake.

I enjoyed doing all my quilts but my favorite Quilt is my past quilt. I like the way the past Quilt came out because I had a lot of ideas bouncing around in my head when doing it. I wasn’t sure how to put them together until I put everything I wanted on the quilt and just started playing around with everything. My least favorites are my inside because that was the first quilt I did and I wasn’t sure how to do the assignment at first. It was the quilt that had the least amount creativity to it.

Artist Statement

My portfolio is full of pictures that utilize different compositional effects and shots. I have taken these photos over a period of time and I feel that with each shot my photography skills have gotten better each time. For example, in the portfolio my very last photo on the page is the very first photo I took. After comparing that photo to some of my more recent photos, I believe that photo is more of a snapshot now. A snapshot is a photo taken with the emphasis in the center of the camera with no use of compositional tricks. I was not sure how to take photos using compositional tricks at first so my photos were kind of bad. But overtime my photos have gotten much better; I like the way they look and the way they come out now.

I also learned how to use Adobe Photoshop to edit my pictures and make them look better. I have obviously used Adobe Photoshop on some pictures in my portfolio and they came out very well. My personal favorite in the portfolio is my lyrics picture. I like my lyrics photo because it looks cool and it’s some thing I would have never expected my self to be able to do in my life. I also like it because it was a creative way of expressing part of myself without writing a Essay.

Personal Words

The lyrics I chose for this project are Hip Hop Saved Me by Lupe Fiasco.

"One you've never heard of, I,push it harder further, the, grind I feel like murder, but
hip hop just saved me. One you've never heard of, I, push it harder further, the grind I feel like murder, but hip hop just saved my life. Hip hope has saved my life , Hip Hop has saved my life, Hip hope has saved my life, Hip Hop has saved my life"

I chose these lyrics because they are very straight forward. I have loved music for a long time, so music has always been a aspect of my life. I have always used music as a form of expression to how I feel. I think Hip Hop has Saved my Life because I think, that if  didnt use music as a form of expression, than I could be like other people who use dangerous forms of expression. For example, people that cut themselves when there upset. Though the lyrics in the whole song dont necessarily relate to me directly, the verse I have posted above does.

Never give up on Dreams

In the photo is a picture of a person standing tall on a football field admiring the cast on his arm. He is looking at his cast. The picture has been taken from an extreme angle to create more of an enphasis on the person in the picture and to make the field goal post stand out more. The words have been sized from top to bottom Large-small-small-Large. The word were arranged like this to show the more importance of the bigger words.

The issue in this picture is the issue of people giving up on dreams because of problems or roadblocks. In society today people give up there dreams way to easily becasue the "going gets tuff". This picture is of a boy who could easily give up on playing football for the season because of his arm being broken. But as he looks up at his arm he realizes that if he gives up right now, he will have to live with that for the rest of his life. So instead of giving up he looks at his arm and smiles because he realizes that though he does have a challenge in front of him, he isn't gonna put his dream on hold if he doesn't have too. He see his cast as another challenge he must overcome to achieve his dream. I can relate this to my life because it seems like ever since i got in highschool the odds have been against me and giving up has always been an option for me. For eample, when the new coaches came and they had made it apparent to me that I wasn't gonna get a fair chance to earn a starting position on the team, I knew I would have to work harder than alor of people because, although quiting was an option I couldn't quit because I love football too much.

Scary Effects

Alien

Vampire

Zombie

My favorite picture was the Alien picture because that picture cam out the best looking out of the all of the pictures. I learned how to use the stamp tool on my Alien picture fore my eyes. The most difficult thing I ran into was using the pen tool for the detailed lines on my alien picture. This skill could be used if developing pictures for a movie

Formal Critique

This photo is of a man working alone on a makeshift bridge that is going all the way across a massive body of water. The picture makes use of lead lines by using the bridge to lead your eye to the emphasis. It also makes use of contrast by making the man darker and making the water lighter. When I look at it I see nothing in the distance of the direction he is going, so this leads me to think that the picture is supposed to be representative of a person life. That throughout life you won’t always have help, that u have to make your own path through life even if u do not know where you will end up in the end. From the way I interpreted the photo I believe this photo is an excellent example of Life. The darkened man working alone and the light, vast, endless ocean contrast well together creating an excellent Illusion to how life is.

Photgraphic Effect

In the past few days we have done many compositional trick but my favorite trick by far is gaussian blur. I like the gaussian blur because it creates a soft look to your photo and pops the emphasis of your photo out more. Although gaussian blur is my favorite, I also had fun adding color to my images.

Contact Sheet

The contact sheet is a spread sheet of all the compositional tricks I have used while taking pictures. My Trick is simplicity because I was able to use a very simple background that drew all the attention to my empahsis, but did not make the picture a snapshot. The trick I think ill start using more often is Leading Lines because leading lines make your pictures look cool by making them look more three dimensional. The trick that was most difficult is the extreme angle because it is hard was hard for me to look at any regular old everyday thing I may see and think "hey this might look good from an extreme angle". My favorite photo was the framing because I like the fact that I was able to frame nature in a beautiful way, kinda like was actual photographers do.

Compositional Trick #8 Fill in Flash

Fill in Flash in when you use the flash on the camera to make your subject brighter and easier to see in the picture.

Compositional Trick #7 Drawing with light

Photography means "drawing with light". Sometimes the best picture is the picture that has the least amount of light on the subject because if u have a dramatic amount of lighting it can create a beautiful picture. (My picture isn't the best example of "drawing with light").

Compositional Trick #6 Framing

Frames are used to guide the viewers eye inside to the emphasis. A frame could be anything and can be found anywhere.

Compositional trick #5 Extreme Angles

Takin pictures from an extreme angle is used to capture everyday things, but from a different view point. Usually a view point that people wouldn't see.

Compositional Trick #4 Simplicity

Simplicity is when u take all other destractions out of the picture and leave only the emphasis.

Compositional Trick #3 Macro

Macro is the kinda picture that is up close, but the background will get blurry to create a more artistic picture. It can also bring out more texture in the picture your taking.

Compositional Trick #2 Leading Lines

You use leading lines in the picture to lead the viewers eyes to the focus of the picture.

Compositional Trick #1 Rule of thirds

The rule of thirds is when u use a tick tac toe boxes that appear on the camera to align the focus of your image on away from the center of the image. This trick will create more of an emphasis on the focus of your picture.
